In honor of FCS Week all FCS classes decided to celebrate the birthday, December 3rd, of the FCS founder, Ellen Swallow Richards. Ellen Swallow Richards (1842–1911) was a pioneering American industrial and safety engineer, as well as a founder of the field of home economics. She is best known for her work in promoting the scientific management of household tasks and the application of scientific principles to domestic life. In 1900, she helped establish the first home economics program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), which laid the foundation for the field. Richards was deeply involved in public health, sanitation, and environmental science, making significant contributions to water quality and nutrition research. Her advocacy for women's education and the professionalization of domestic work earned her the title of the "founder" of home economics, a field that aimed to improve the quality of life through scientific knowledge applied to home and family management. #FCSWeek #ElevateFCS
